Accessibility: a brief overview

What

The responsibility to comply with accessibility standards

Accessibility describes the responsibility to make products and services (including websites) accessible to people with disabilities.

The European Accessibility Act (EAA) states that by June 2025, companies must comply with the compliance standard of WCAG 2.1 Level AA .

Why

The internet should be an accessible place for everyone

Accessibility compliance is an important step towards ensuring that digital content is usable by a wider range of people, including those with disabilities.

Having accessible websites also supports business growth by reaching more diverse audiences.

How

The Mono Platform supports compliance with WCAG AA

The Mono Platform is compliant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA, hence already meeting the requirements of The European Accessibility Act (EAA).

WCAG 2.1 Level AA is a widely used compliance standard. Meeting this standard means that a website is usable by most people with or without disabilities.

What is WCAG 2.1 Level A and AA?

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) were developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Mono adheres to both Level A and AA as they build on each other. Below is more information about what each level means.

WCAG Level A – Basic Accessibility

Level A is the minimum standard for web accessibility and addresses critical issues that could block users with disabilities from accessing content. Under WCAG 2.1, there are 30 criteria to meet, including:

  • Text alternatives for non-text content such as images or video
  • Full keyboard navigation
  • Clear labels or instructions for forms
  • Compatibility with assistive technologies like screen readers.

WCAG Level AA – Strong Accessibility

WCAG Level AA builds on Level A by addressing more diverse user needs, making it the standard most experts recommend. It includes all Level A criteria plus 20 additional requirements, such as:

  • Adequate text and background contrast (minimum 4.5:1 ratio).
  • Content organized under clear, logical headings (e.g., H1, H2, H3).
  • Consistent navigation elements across the site.

What do I need to do as a Mono Partner?

For a website to meet accessibility requirements, the content must be accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. This means for example having captions on videos, alternative text on images and sufficient colour contrast on text versus background.

The Mono Platform includes all the infrastructural components to make this as easy for you to achieve.

You can use WCAG's four principles described below to make your client websites fully accessible:

WCAG's four principles of accessibility

WCAG outlines a series of guidelines and success criteria organized around four principles:

  1. Perceivable: Information and user interface components must be presented in ways that users can perceive.
  2. Operable: User interface components and navigation must be operable.
  3. Understandable: Information and the operation of user interface must be understandable.
  4. Robust: Content must be robust enough that it can be interpreted reliably by a wide variety of user agents, including assistive technologies.
